Yahrzeit of Rabbi Yehuda Loevy ben Bezalel of Prague (The Maharal of Prague), Rebbe, Talmudist, Kabbalist, Rosh Yeshivah, Head Rabbi of Prague, creator of the Golem of Prague. (5369/1609) The Maharal is the author of Tiferet Yisrael which speaks of the greatness of Torah and mitzvot; Netivot Olam, concerning ethical conduct and good midot; Be'er Hagolah, a commentary on rabbinical quotations; Netzach Yisrael, about Clal Yisrael's exile and imminent redemption; Or Chadash, on the book of Megillah Esther; Ner Mitzvah, concerning Chanukah; Gevurot Hashem, an in-depth look at the Haggadah and freedom from Egypt; he also wrote quite a few other holy books. The Maharal is considered by many to be the father of the Chassidic Movement and the Mussar Movement. He reveals many of the mysteries of Creation, metaphysics, and Kabbalistic teachings in a style that has been accepted unanimously by all schools of thought. As an educator of all ages, the Maharal advocated following the process of teaching recommended in the Talmud (Pirkei Avot). In the Maharal's day, there was a tremendous and unrelenting danger for the Jewish community from the anti-Semetic, non-G-dfearing population. Therefore, to remedy the situation, the Maharal created the Golem of Prague, a giant Frankenstein-like being who became the protector of the Jewish people in the region. In Prague today, Altneu Schul, built in 1270, (which became the Maharal's synagogue) stands today.
